I started getting grey hairs when I was 27years old.
I have never had the urged to colour my hair but as the grey hairs have developed and become more obvious on my hairline, I have decided it’s time for me to experiment with at home hair colour.
My research shows foam/mousse is the best type of hair colour for natural 4c hair colouring.
Now let’s get a little intellectual as to why we colour our hair and if it has any adverse effects on the health of our hair.
Sometimes people colour their hair as a trend, to fit in with a hair style of the season Or moment.
Others like me do it or cover their greys, some just like to experiment with hair colour.
What ever your reason it’s important to remember that improper hair colouring can damage your hair.
As you are opting up the cuticle of the hair allowing the colour to penetrate and settle.
Improper care of coloured hair can lead to dryness, split ends and breakage.
Hair type stereotypes Not my words but assumptions made about people with different types of hair, blondes are sexy but dumb, redheads feisty and cannot be trusted, while brunettes are dependable and smart. Deep down we all know that hair color should not make any difference in how someone is perceived or treated, yet it still happens.
Now here comes the preconceived notions of Afro hair, these are usually not said out loud but believe me they exist.
Afro hair is untamed, it’s unprofessional.
Nappy hair 4C type curl is viewed as bad hair &
loose curl type hair is viewed as good hair.
We are still a long way away from doing away with all these stereotypes associated to our hair, but progress has been made.
though we can do better.
And concepts of Afro hair being good or bad need to be dismantled in African homes and communities including the diaspora.
Facts of a study (your hair affects your earning potential)
In a study of 13,000 women the University of Queensland found out that blondes make 7 percent more money than their darker haired sisters. Which is interesting, since blondes are also the subject of many jokes all expressing that they are not esteemed to be very intelligent.
Now the above doesn’t really apply to Afro hair sisters, We are so behind on the pay gap scale, It even triggers me talking about it
This pay gap is well documented in the Ethnicity pay gaps in Great Britain, 2018.
it is part of our own going struggle caused by many factors that include our identity which is our hair.
Now back to the topic at hand.
Personally the reason I am colouring my hair is because the greys are really starting to annoy me.
I am also starting to realise that hair as significant as it is to my identity, it’s just that hair if I loose it through poor care it will grow, I am meant to enjoy my hair show my personality through different hair styles experimenting with colour.

Method used for my DIY hair colour
Products used
John Frieda Precision hair colour in deep brown and Deep Cherry brown.
Plus some Vaseline applied all round the skin around my hairline. The Inkey list PCA bond repair hair treatment

I applied the deep brown mousse first from
roots to the middle part of my hair.
Left it to sit for 15minutes, then applied the Deep Cherry brown to the rest of my hair waited for another 15minutes then wash the colour out on my hair.
I applied the conditioner after left

while the hair was still damp, I sprayed the PCA bond treatment.
Then followed on with a leave in conditioner.
